The Douro is a river that has its source in Spain. Our journey begins at the small village of Paradela that marks the border between Spain and Portugal. A rugged region, with high slopes where the Douro winds between high granitic walls. Downstream of Barca d’Alva, both sides of the river become Portuguese, twisting and turning as large river cruise boats travel the final 130 mile of its course before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean in Porto.
This tour is a blend of trails and tracks that winds through olive groves, vineyards and dusty tracks as we follow the Alto Douro from Paradela to Barca d’Alv. From here tourism is woven sympathetically along the Douro. We visit tourist attractions along the river as it makes its way to the colorful city of Porto. Each overnight stop will be in a different location along our route, sampling local cultures along the way. No trip to Portugal should be without a pastéis de nata or a glass or two of Port.
The costs of this tour is anticipated at £1600.00 for to 2 people sharing, with 6 nights bed and breakfast in combination of rural hotels and bed and breakfast establishments, along our route. This tour does not include fuel, road tolls, food and drinks (other than breakfast) throughout the tour.
We have not included ferry or overnight costs into the cost of this tour. This allows customer to choose their own method and pace of travel to and from Portugal. However, we can advise on sea crossings and routes to and from Portugal.
The tour commences on the Sunday 20th September and concludes Saturday 26th September near to Porto, the second largest city in Portugal.
